Mahatma Gandhi Government Arts College (MGGAC Mahe / Mahe College) is the premier higher educational institution of the Mahe region and the present campus is located in a serene, picturesque and sprawling area at Mount Vera, Chalakkara, Mahe. It blossomed as the outcome of the efforts of the Puducherry administration with the avowed objective of imparting quality education in Arts, Humanities and Science to all the constituent units of the Union Territory. The College was inaugurated on 11th December 1970 by Shri. B.D. Jatti, His Excellency the Lt. Governor of Puducherry. Prof. M.M. Ghani, Vice Chancellor, University of Calicut, unveiled the plaque. The function was presided over by Shri. M.O.H. Farook, the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Puducherry. The institution started off as a junior college affiliated to the University of Calicut. It attained the status of a full-fledged degree college in the year 1973 and a Post Graduate Institution in the year 1992. The college is presently affiliated to the Pondicherry University and is accredited 'B' Grade by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council). The college has good infrastructural facilities, well equipped laboratories, qualified and experienced Faculties.
The Department of Physics, Mahatma Gandhi Government Arts College, Mahe, organized the Inauguration of the Physics Association along with an Invited Lecture titled “Mastering Physics: A Journey from Curiosity to Discovery” on Tuesday, 07 October 2025. This academic event was aimed at promoting scientific thinking and encouraging the exploration of physics beyond textboo
The Botany Association organized an inter Departmental Quiz competition on 8th October 2025 on the eve of “Wildlife Week 2025”. Eleven teams (each team comprising two members) from different Departments participated in the programme. There were four rounds and at the end of fourth round the Team Botany (Aiswarya K.M. and Sandra K.) scored 47.5 points and secured the First prize. The Team Zoology (Gopika K.V. and Krishna Priya A.V.) scored 30 points and secured the Second prize and the Team Chemistry (Ananya and Deva) scored 22.5 points and secured the Third Prize. Dr. Girish Kumar E., Assistant Professor of Botany officiated as the Quiz master. Members of the Association (Students and Faculty members) helped in conducting the event in a befitting manner.
The inauguration of Botany Association activities for the academic year 2025-26 was held on 12th September 2025 at 10 am in the Seminar Hall. The Principal Dr. K.K. Sivadasan presided over the function and appreciated the efforts of the Department. Dr. G. Pradeep Kumar, Head of the Department welcomed the gathering. Dr. Shine S. Nair, BAMS, MD, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Head, Department of Pediatrics, Rajiv Gandhi Ayurveda Medical College and Hospital, Mahe officiated as the Resource Person and inaugurated the activities of the Botany Association. He emphasized the need to undertake collaborative research in the field of medicinal plants. Meritorious students B.Sc. and M.Sc. toppers (Avandhika P.K. and Chandhana Prasanth), Ph.D. holders (Anusree M.E. and Amrutha A.), UGC-CSIR JRF AND NET qualified students (Charutha Bhaskaran, Meghna T.K., Kavya P. and Hridya K.) were honored during the occasion. Participation certificates of Internship at BSI, Coimbatore were distributed to the third-year students. Cash prize and momentos were distributed to the winners of quiz competition organized in connection with the National Science Day 2025. Dr. K.M. Gopinathan, IQAC Coordinator and Head, Department of Zoology and Mrs. Suchithra P., PTA President felicitated the programme. A special lecture on the topic “Rasayana in Ayurveda: A Botanical and Therapeutic Insight” was delivered by the chief guest. During his talk Dr. Shine explained the Rasayana treatment and its importance with the help of beautiful PowerPoint presentation. The talk was appreciated by one and all participated. The programme was attended by faculty members (Botany and other subjects) and students of B.Sc. and M.Sc. Botany.
Department of Forests, Govt. of Puducherry and PG Department of Botany MGGAC jointly organised Van Mahotsav 2025 on 04.07.2025.
Students of IInd B.Com. conducted a survey on Income generation, spending, and saving habits of the households of Valavil and Parakkal areas of Mahe as part of the community engagement programme.
